Baking Dreams Into Reality - LAGATTA BAKERY
As told by Andrea Restrepo
My name is Andrea Restrepo, and I was born on March 3, 1986, in Medellín, Colombia. Life showed me early on that the path to growth is rarely easy, but always worth it. At 16, I left my home country and moved to the United States — a leap into the unknown that would eventually become the beginning of something beautiful.
My first jobs here were in Italian restaurants. That’s where I discovered my love for cooking. I found magic in the details, in transforming simple ingredients into something that could create joy and connection. Even then, I had a clear vision: I wanted to own my own business. That dream stayed with me through every challenge — especially as a young mother to my two amazing children, Darían and Sofía. They’ve always been my “why.”
My passion for the kitchen runs deep. My mother was a chef and introduced me to the culinary world from a young age. She opened my eyes to the richness and creativity that food allows. Over the years, I found myself drawn to pastry — especially laminated doughs like puff pastry and the dough used in croissants. They challenged me, fascinated me, and eventually became my specialty.
I didn’t go to culinary school. Everything I know, I’ve learned on my own — testing recipes, mixing flours, failing, adjusting, and trying again until I got it just right. After years of dedication, I finally mastered the doughs that once intimidated me. That journey of learning and resilience led me to create a line of pastries that are now at the heart of my bakery.
The dream became real when Lagatta was born — a business I co-founded with my dear friend, Laura Vélez. She’s an incredibly talented architect and artist from Medellín, and together we merged our love for food and creativity into something truly special. Lagatta is more than just a bakery — it’s a reflection of who we are as women, artists, and dreamers.
The name Lagatta was inspired by the Middle Ages — a time that fascinates us, not only for its rich history, but for the strength of the women who lived through it. Women who quietly carried traditions, who worked hard, and who passed on their knowledge from kitchen to kitchen. Lagatta honors that spirit of strength, creativity, and feminine resilience.
Our bakery combines the warmth of handmade goods with a cozy, vintage touch. We want people to feel something when they walk in — a sense of home, of care, of intention in every detail. For us, it’s about more than just pastries. We want to create an experience that stirs the senses, connects with culture, and sparks emotion.
We are deeply committed to quality. That means using fresh, local, and whenever possible, organic ingredients. We believe that love and care are just as important as flavor.
One of the proudest moments in this journey was being featured in the Reading Eagle under the headline: “Hamburg welcomes several new women-owned businesses.” It was a powerful reminder that all the late nights, the sacrifices, and the learning curves were worth it.
More than recognition, though, my dream is to inspire others. To be a reminder that it’s never too late, and you don’t have to be perfect to begin. If you have a passion — nurture it, follow it, and share it. Because when dreams are mixed with love and perseverance, they always find a way to rise — golden, crisp, and ready to be shared with the world.

They make AMAZING baked goods here! The store is rather small and there's no tables and limited seating, but they more than make up for it in the quality of their products. Everything is made fresh on site everyday. Highly recommended, but get in quick because they frequently sell out of things because of how popular they have become.
